India is bestowed with unique, rich and diverse animal resources, which contribute significantly to the gross national product of nthe country. These animal resources are an intgral component of the rural economy and to a gerater extent essential for human survival and sustainable development. Unrealistic utilization of these resources to feed teeming population would jeopardize the fine balance between, land, animal and human. For sustained management, conservation and augmentation of our animal and fishery resources, a regionwise perspective plan for next 25 years has been drafted under the auspices of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
     The livestock sector has great potential to generate selfemployment, especially for rural landless labours, margibal farmers and the farmers that are dependent on rain-fed agriculture. The sector, thus, can be used as an important tool to alleviate rural poverty. For this reason, the Government of Maharashtra took an epoch making decision 1998 to establish Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Science University(MAFSU).
     This vocational programme, which can be persuaded by the students instead of Std 11th and 12th is primarily meant for rural areas and for interested entrepreneurs in this sector. The students can avail of the different schemes of the state and central governments. Loans are provided by M.C.E.D so that students can start their own business. The college maintains constant ties with the ex-students to provide techincal supprot and get their feedback.
